The Final Kindness

When the change came, when the world became at last kind and compassionate and willing to do what it would take to begin to heal the earth, it was a single act of kindness that did it. For ten thousand years, for the bulk of human history, all the good that was ever done was slowly accumulating, while all the bad was blown away in the winds coming off the sun. And so one year, one day, one moment, someone somewhere did something kind – and not anything heroic, ming you, just the kind of thing that decent human beings do to each other all the time – and that one action, that one little thing, was enough to tip the balance, start an avalanche, spark the fire, and goodness and rightness began to reclaim the earth, which had missed them so badly while they were in exile.
